To this end the WWF embarked on an ambitious promotional push for WrestleMania XI that would see the recently retired NFL legend, and future first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer, Lawrence Taylor battle Bam Bam Bigelow in the main event of the big show. In this the WWF found itself in a kind of paradox wherein they needed to play it safe while at the same time hoping for something or someone new to breakout success without risk. Still under federal investigation for illegal distribution of steroids, Vince McMahon and the WWF weren’t eager to court controversy or trouble. Though television ratings and pay-per-view buyrates remained steady, there remained a feeling that the WWF wasn’t at the top of their game. Attendance to live events was up some 12% over the prior year while gates were up nearly 40% over the same period a year before. The sex and drug scandals of the early ’90s, coupled with an economic recession and high unemployment, that had crippled the wrestling industry for the prior four years seemed to be abating. ![]() While the spring of 1995 were lean times for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), it was also a time of hope.
